In the early 70s, at college radio station WERS FM. I was jock, news director, and program director, by senior year I was working at WVBF/WKOX and didn't have time for college radio anymore. A year before that in 1972, we had taken a staid mor college radio station and transformed it onto the "boss of the back bay", as part of the transformation we started a live Saturday Night oldies show. It was called "We Rockin" and it was hosted by Flying Floyd Wright. The show featured old hacked jingles. College kids have no fear of lawsuits so we cut away at Pams and TM jingle packages. We also used the Cruisin Series of cd's. Drop ins from comedy lps, wild tracks from other stations. Ray C is still on the air doing mornings at WEIM in Fitchburg Ma, he's been at one station thru 3 owners over 35 years. The Station Manger on the sign off announcement went on to have a great career in Radio and later TV news. In Providence, Rhode Island at Channel 10, WJAR and then in Rochester NY. Mike Morgan, died tragically in the early 80s.
I ran the board for the show, which means I controlled the jingles, the song placement, and when the drop ins were played. However, one of the things we did was have a box called news rollers. In it were 45 rpms whose only claim to fame were they were instrumentals. Some of these tunes were very obscure if you can name this song it would be a great help. Think about it, today's radio does not provoke this kind of passionate response.
