New Years Eve on the Web 2004!

in association with Media Network.

And additional mirror of this site is located in Europe. It will be updated live on New Years Eve in real time.

More Than 250 links to events around the world, the most you'll find on the web.

This site updated as of  December 30, 2004 Please refresh or clear your cache to get the latest version.

How to use this website:

The idea is to get you to a web cast or web cam as quickly as possible. Not a lot of graphics, scripts or other things that would slow you down.  In most cases you'll find a direct link. The web cams are an example of this.  In other cases you'll have to search for the live audio at the website you've clicked into. For example, if you want to know  what the current time in UTC is visit here.  Since we are using Style Sheets, the link is highlighted in color. Some sites are in Korean, Chinese, French, or another languages you might not understand. Look for graphics that will clue you, like the Real Player Logo, or Windows Media Logo. Hint: roll your mouse over the link, if you see "ra", "rm", that is a link to a Real Networks stream.  If you see "asf", or "wma"  that is Windows Media. If you don't see either, you may go to Real or Microsoft's website to pick up the player.) Why mainly radio and not TV?  Radio station streams work well over modem connections. Radio stations can not resist either doing a live broadcast or something different as midnight approaches. What about Webcams? They'll also provide good connections.

The best of Radio from the 60's including WNYW can be found at this part of the website.

 Background

Several years ago, Kim Elliott at the Voice of America spent his New Years Eve, listening to how the world celebrated using short-wave radio to hear international and domestic stations ring in the New Year.  Kim used to host Communications World every weekend on the Voice of America. Kim will be live on Jan 1, 2004 on Talk to America on VOA. The program is currently available to listen to on demand. .We have assembled a list of webcasters (stations who transmit programs over the Internet), webcams (cameras that take a photo every few seconds)  who will usher in the New Year 2003. To get you started here is a twenty two minute audio clip from WABC, it features Cousin Bruce Morrow (now at CBS FM in NYC), Guy Lombardo via remote and Charlie Greer (deceased) following on the overnight. Suddenly it's 1965. The ABC Newscast sounds an awful lot like today's news doesn't it?  Moving forward a few years, NBC Radio's Ben Grauer reported the arrival of the New Year from Times Square in New York .He did this for several decades (and you thought Dick Clark was the first to do it?) This is one of his last live reports, on New Year's Eve 1971. It's the last clip on the page. (may be an earlier year)

Today, this is all you will need.  A Real Audio Player or Player Plus from www.real.com. and Microsoft's Windows Media Player.  Apple QuickTime 6 will help you listen to live radio from outlying French Islands   Good Luck!

If you are visiting this site before Dec 31st, 2004, this is a great way see what webcasting has to offer. More than 12,000 radio stations worldwide are webcasting. In previous years I have updated this website while the broadcasts were going on, last year I used the blog for this purpose, it was faster and quicker, so check there (link marked mirror in Europe) for the latest live updates. This year we are not adding any new sites to this page. Radio stations we do hear will be reflected on the blog.  I will clean up the dead links.  This year you are on your own. The blog will have information on how to contact me.  Also we will be live on Talk to America on VOA at 1600 UTC, December 31st.

Showcase Sites:

These are sites that have been chosen to give you a feel for what can be accomplished with webcasting.

The biggest changes for this year are the number of radio stations that are using Windows Media, they surpass Real for the first time ever worldwide. In the 3rd world you will find that mp3 streaming is the norm, you will have great music from various Island and African countries but the streams will be mp3, which all three major players can handle.

Real released Real 9, its mainly for video but it does feature surround sound audio. With Real One Player the company has moved into the pay audio and video space. Content from CNN and ABC that was once free you have to pay to receive, Real 8, allows you to view DVD quality video over a broadband connection. VHS quality is possible at lesser speeds.  Real 8 audio jointly created with Sony made it's debut at the end of October 2000. Most sites are running Real 8.  Real player 2 is currently in beta. Real is having problems, I don't expect them to be around next year.  This year Real introduced Helix which is a server than can stream any format. You get 125 free streams before having to pay up a license fee. the old Real server you started to pay at 100 streams)  The latest Real Player can play any format as well including Windows Media and Quicktime 6, plus the popular mp3. Real is now at version ten.   Between both now there really isn't that much difference.

The latest version of Windows Media Player is 9.  Content is located at this site.  Corona which is the latest Windows Media Server the fast server has sprung up on a lot of sites this year.  It runs .net services and it is BUFFER LESS. If you have ever waited for a file to buffer before it starts to play,  you will appreciate what Microsoft has done. Check the radio stations from the Philippines they are using Windows Media 9 plus the Corona server. The audio uses an entirely different compression codec and is amazing in sound quality. Corona and Windows Media 9 launched in LA on September 5, 2002. Windows Media new only works with Windows 2000 or Windows XP, the codec's however will work with older players as they automatically download when you run across Windows Media 9 content. Windows Media nine player and encoder do not work on Windows 98. Windows Media Nine Series is used by a several European national and public radio webcasters. Windows Media Ten Player came along in 04. It's only for XP and it's mainly to help Microsoft sell music over the internet.

Apple has the newest streaming player, find it at www.apple.com/quicktime. Check out the TV channels for live BBC World, it's a knockoff of CNN.  It streams UDP only so it won't work with a firewall, which means at work you probably won't see these sites if your using a work high speed connection.  Downloading QuickTime clips will however work from your job. Apple has released Quick Time 5, with improvements in video. The latest version of it's server has improved error handling. Apple Quick Time can be streamed with an Real server. QuickTime 6 supports MPEG 4 video and AAAC audio and was released in early June. This will change the way you view video on the web. MPEG 4 audio isn't bad either.

Want to know more about Webcasting and how it works? The best book on the subject was never published. This year two more books on how to webcast have appeared on the market you can find them at any computer book store or at Borders or at Amazon. COM  in the US.

Here's this site from the year 2000.
Webcasting Research

Arbitron's New Media group is doing a lot of work in this area. The latest study can be found at this site. The first webcast ratings were released in 2000.  You'll find the studies and the ratings at the internet site.  A new player in webcasting measurement is measurecast, every Tuesday they update their webcast ratings.Arbitron acquired Measurecast in November of 2002. NB: With the cessation of webcasting by major US stations, the reporting by both these companies is not a reliable as it should be. The stations numbers that are reported by this system continues to vary on a month to month basis. In short its a kind of bogus research.  Arbiton is back in the measurement game for 2004.  Check the website for information.

Radio Stations:

Here's how you use this list. Since everyone's time zones are different, we will use UTC, here's an example. When it's 7 AM in New York it's noon UTC. That means midnight arrives at 7 pm in New York.  The time line here will start on Dec 31st and end on January 1st. When it's midnight in Hawaii, on Dec 31st it's January 1st, UTC. I'm confused by all this time stuff. Is there a link that can explain it on the web?  If you need to find the exact time in a country use the search form. You can also find the time here.

Get Current Time with World Time Server
Enter a country or city:

"I was in an audience yesterday, and a guy yelled, 'Hey, Casey Kasem!' (if you click this link you'll get an R-Rated outtake) I said, 'No, not quite.'"  --- "New Year's Rockin' Eve" host DICK CLARK, 75(yes he's 75)  to Time Out New York magazine. Dick Clark will not be part of the live coverage from US broadcaster ABC. This show will have been on the air for thirty three years as of 2005's broadcast. It's the first time Dick Clark has missed a New Years Rockin Eve.  The host this year is Regis Philbin.
Now on with the Countdown:

Dec 31st, 2002, here is what we heard in the past year.

Note:: Many of these Web sites experience heavy traffic and may be difficult to view or listen to at peak times. Tune in 15 minutes before midnight for video or webcams. Radio stations about 15 to 25 minutes before 12.  If you access the Internet with a modem, these sites also may load slowly. Please be patient and keep trying. We've tested these links with a 28.8, and 56k modem. We've also tested with high speed broadband. See if you can find a DSL provider still in business in the US. If you're cable system is not using AOL Time Warmers Road Runner, you may find time limits to hearing streaming content. Wallis and Futuna in the South Pacific, the format is Quick Time. Tonga does not have live webcasting but it does have a site. You'll have to pay to listen to Tonga. Kiritmati on Kiribati but alas you'll have to try shortwave for this one. The RFO web server was not connecting New Years Eve, try searching the RFO site for the site map and use the live radio link.
At this point try the webcasts of the major TV networks. CNN and ABC are now pay sites, MSNBC is still free.   from the UK try these: www.sky.co.uk or www.bbc.co.uk. The joint NBC news and Microsoft cable network has live video here. Another site that's going to provide coverage is ITN in London( lots of great stuff live from the UK.now). (some PBS stations in the US carry their newscasts). Broadcast. COM no longer streams anything it's been shut down.  I have never heard anything from Wallis Island.

If you are looking for something to listen to live during the entire day try this site.

1015 UTC  Chatham Island its near New Zealand and there was a ham station there for a bit but its of the air.

1100 UTC

http://www.morefm.com/  More FM in Wellington, New Zealand.  A "Best Mix" station, mainly music. You would never have believed it, Rick Dees countdown of the top hits of last year. This site may or may not be working. It was when we checked on Dec 21st.. Check this site for other live streaming stations from New Zealand. Radio New Zealand is streaming.  Even though the website says they are not streaming,. they are in fact. New for this year another FM in Auckland. Here is an mp3 streaming site here. Here is a live webcam from New Zealand. The Greaseman is doing his live New Years Eve Show in Washington DC, it runs for four hours listen live or on demand  you can try here.. webcam in Auckland New ZealandNew Zealand webcams last year were great, the radio stations were not. No audio on New Years Eve 2000 from New Zealand. Webcams were ok if you got here early like Pete Costello did. I noted that Morefm's website was down because of the traffic an hour into the New Year in New Zealand. Greaseman's streaming was also affected. I did hear the new FM from Auckland with New Year's Greetings. In 2003 More FM did their local countdown and at the New Year starts Rick Dees weekly top 40, which seems to be an annual tradition for this station. The other NZ webcast sites worked well also. NZ is one of the few countries left that still is mainly Real Networks.  You should be able to hear at least one of these.
fijivillage.com/radio    These stations were not webcasting, just the top ten in Real Audio. You may find news from Fiji here. This is now a pay site.  Here's a live webcam from the South Pole. The New Year in 03 at the South PoleHere's another one in Spanish from Scott Base. This is now a pay per view website.

Now it's local midnight in Vanuatu, in the South Pacific,. and on Russia's Pacific Coast. This lovely island is in the South Pacific new this year Palau. This new site did stream in 03 however it sounded automated. Nothing special going to midnight. We aren't sure about what the story is with Palau, live or tape.

1230 UTC

Looking for the words to Auld Lang Syne?

The website of Norfolk Island's radio station. This page has been under construction since 99. We don't know if this site will ever feature streaming.

1300 UTC One webcastnrj cat logo from New Caledonia. make sure you have an mp 3 player for this version of NRJ.Here's another from RFO it will need Quick Time. Both of the stations were not streaming on New Years Eve 02. The NRJ shoutcast feed was not heard. I heard RFO though the quicktime streaming was awful. NRJ's shoutcast feed was much better. Neither station did anything that was unique or special.  The webcam worked. There is also a webcam in New CaledoniaNew Caledonia at NightAnother great multi-resource site from the national broadcaster ABC, including TV, Radio and Webcams.Choose Here's a public radio station  in Melbourne or try the Triple J network. Sydney's talk station with live webcams is www.2gb.com  This site is very slow to connect caution. In 2002 you could hear the fireworks Then the web connection failed. Victoria: Edge FM 102.1 Web: http://www.edgefm.com.au/    This is an FM station in Melbourne. New for this year is ABC Coast FM (Network 3)  Both Real and Windows Media audio feeds. Two firework shows in Sydney on this night: on at 9pm local time and then at Midnight. The view Sydney link directly below) has both fireworks shows on New Years Eve. The nine o'clock show at the Harbor Bridge was postpone because of wind conditions but the midnight one was great. I listened to 2GB ring in the New Year with Auld, and watched the fireworks on the 2GB cam 2gb no longer has a cam, and the live webcam was swamped. but thanks to the local newspapers we have these shots of the fireworks.2003 fireworks in Sydney2003 firewrorks in Sydney

Radio from here was fairly easy to listen to, the talk stations were great, the local CHR however which co sponsored the fireworks was swamped. Check the blog for something you'll really like at this hour.

1330 UTC It's New Years in South Australia this is a tough target  because of it's time zone you can try here. And you did, this site died at 1325. This is the only station we found to be webcasting. SA FM is no longer webcast New for this year is Life FM This station was on but didn't do anything special,  from South Australia. Here is a webcam from South AustraliaSouth Australia 2003For the local news in SA check here. None of these stations was streaming audio. This used to be a fun half hour, but with copyright issues the good streaming has dried up.
1400 UTC
http://www.radiopacific.com/k57/  Guam, Talk Station..  Web page working fine but Real audio not responding, in Washington DC, rebuffered so I switched to the sister FM it had a countdown and live remote broadcast.  Both of these sites were full by 1330 in 2002. However this year only k57 will be heard from this island in the South Pacific as the FM station is no longer webcasting because of the copyright fee issues. In 2003 this station on Guam that didn't get the memo. This year they did you can try but you won't get any audio. Sorry the only webcast you will get from this island in the South Pacific is from the AM station KUAM. This wasn't heard to listen to as it has been in previous years, mainly syndicated talk programmming. You can also try this Classic Rock Station in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. This site also not available. I found the River in Brisbane with Windows Media and it is getting hammered hard, lots of rebuffering and a countdown with Pink to get the party started. It's a New Year in Vladivostok listen in. Working but took a long time to download Very slow server again this past year. Again no feed from this station in 2002. New for 2003, SEA FM. From Saipan we have a  new live webcam. This cam may or may not still be working.

Webcam on SaipanYou could listen to Sea FM and also the River, the Russian station you could not get to the stream. This was again true for 2003.

1430 UTC A first from this time zone, Darwin in the Northwest Territories of Australia. This was running BBC World Service East Asia feed. Darwin had a live webcam here It's offline but you can try.

Or you can check out Alice Springs Webcam.Darwin WebCamListened to the ABC station ring in the New Year but the webcams were dead. Fun but check the blog it's going to be better.

Japan: http://www.fm-champla.co.jp/ Real 8 feed was very clean. This was an easy station to listen to this year as well. Live jazz concert. Another FM from Japan new this year.
webcam of the TV tower in JapanTokyo Skyline click for latest photo Tokyo at Midnight from the Rose Bridge. We need help in finding other Japanese stations that are webcasting. These cameras were overwhelmed. Japan will be very hard to listen to or see most of the links are active but. Japan as a webcasting target is very tough.

http://www.mbc.co.kr/  MBS in Korea audio and video. The FM station featured a very low key air talent. Had a live event running that was tough to get to. This site uses a custom player.
http://www.sbs.co.kr/  SBS Webvision in Korea  FM station playing music with  ... Lots of re-buffering.
http://www.kbs.co.kr/onair/kbsonair.htm  KBS Korea  Tough to connect, lots of re-buffering. Live with a Parade in Korea.(thanks to Tom Sundstrom for the info) KBS TV 2 had a New Years Rockin" eve kind of show. Radio stations were very tough to get because of net congestion. The KBS 1 and 2 TV broadcast streams were recordable. Korea has a large group of broadband users. If you have problems with these stations try the links at www.comfm.com  live radio, Korea.  The KBS stations failed first, the others were listenable with audio but no video. All the Korean stations were jammed again this year. Not a single one could you hear or watch. Please note Korea has the most broadband use of any country in the world. Sorry nothing heard in 2003. Korea, very tough unless you speak the language.

1600 UTC

These stations are in the Philippines. These stations are running under Windows Media Nine and the Corona server so they stream very fast. Listened to 103.5 with live call ins and love songs into 03.
http://www.rthk.org.hk/  Radio-TV Hong Kong , China  Pop from the from the 70s and 80s wang chung and chic. MBR stream 2002 Featured a live countdown and fireworks, Real 8 Feed. From Beijing, the FM station of CRI Joy FM.           webcam from China and it's no longer working Radio TV Hong Kong you could  get a stream from in 03, your choice real or windows media.  however CRI's joy fm was doing a New Years Eve retrospective with a nice clean feed.
The Singapore Live Radio Network Class FM 95, a multi bit rate stream. You can try here for RSI, the international service. These guys have serious server problems. Slow servers and when you get there you wait for the page to load. The one station I was able to get was carrying a live party remote. This was better in 03 than in previous years, the stations now have pop up players from Singapore, listened to the light rock station playing love songs into 03. These are tough to log onto to when you get to hear one don't disconnect you may not get back in.
Perth., Western Australia  Dance track that made it to a live countdown under a freaky spoken word. Live clock on website was a nice touch with local time. not my computers clock time. Very heavy use on this site, lots of rebuffering. This is a public radio station, so it's commercial free. This station was again audible in 2002. The use an embedded real player. New for 2003 a live webcam from Perth. This station's stream was maxed out by the time I got to the site about an hour before midnight.. The webcam worked well.webcam in Perth New for 2004 is this AC from Perth. This was a neat little station I have an mp3 aircheck of what they sounded like.    Malaysia its in English but you need to register to hear the stream in Windows Media.

http://www.icrt.com.tw/_fr1.asp  Various Stations in Taiwan Search for the live webcam with live shots of air studio and talent. Fm 100 was audible with little rebuffering.Brunei has streaming audio here. In 2002 everyone wanted to hear it. The site was slow and in some cases returned a page not found error. The Windows Media server here was overwhelmed. Fm 100 was great into the New Year, but again Brunei was not heard.

New for 2003 Vietnam, this year the Voice of Vietnam promises a streaming webcast from 1500 to 1630 UTC. This was way strange as the encoder was running but no audio stream. This may or may not be working, I suspect its canned.

New Years in Vietnam
